Ok, I saw you are evaluating Microblaze, but in this case you don't have
the VHDL for the CPU (not at least something human readable).
If you need the source code for the CPU core I'll suggest trying LEON3
(GRLib from Gaisler). We have various boards where LEON3 is supported
"out-of-the-box", (2 with Spartan 3 and other with Virtex 4), but if you
have to buy one try the ones from Pender, they are specifically designed
to run LEON3 (we have one with Spartan 3 1500). LEON3 source code (VHDL)
is under the GPL license, very good option for an academic project.
If you don't need the source code of the CPU and you can even use a hard
core then try to get one of the Xilinx University Program boards (your
Uni could have it or you can ask Xilinx to donate one) with Virtex 2
Pro, these FPGAs have Power PC hardcores. You can use the PPC from the EDK.
Microblaze is ok only if you can use a black-box as CPU.
