If you want a nice user interface and are willing to spend $200, you
can use a Nokia N800 and put an FPGA or a CPLD on an SD card. If I
am not mistaken, the Nokia runs Linux with a ~400 MHz ARM type
processor and has an 800 x 480 color LCD. It is hard to beat the low
cost and utility of an off the shelf PDA.

Antti Lucats made such a card using a Lattice XP Flash based
device. But you could use any FPGA that comes in a 100 pin TQFP or
if you are willing to work with BGAs, you can go up to 256 pins, IIRC.

The only essential part of the SD card format the plug
definition. You can always make the upper end larger to suit your
needs, even use a larger FPGA! This would be so much easier than
trying to build your own CPU card and it will provide so much more
    functionality.
