I would agree with you, but it seems like if people have patent something, they tend to be more open with spreading the word about their work. So for someone trying to learn something new, there might be a point to look into a patented work.
I have no interest in any commercial use of it. For me it is just a learning experience, but also would like to share it on opencores. That is where the legal issues comes in.
