Subject: [oc] Made In India OLPC With OpenCores SOC
I have been working on a project similar to OLPC for many years in Brazil. For the last few years I have had a partner in India/Singapore who is waiting for me to send him some prototypes so he can start making machines there as well. Currently I am working on the processor cores that we will use and the first generation will be based on FPGAs. All the cores and software being created for this project will be available under a BSD/MIT style license.
While the OLPC computer is a Linux PC, my project is a Smalltalk machine. Since OLPC includes Squeak/eToys as one of their activities there is a lot of overlap between the two projects. My previous processors designs were optimized exclusively for Smalltalk but the current one will work well with languages such as Java and Python besides doing a very good job dealing with C. Though a port would not be trivial, it would be possible to run Linux on this, so this might be an option for a second generation OLPC machine. Here is a really short description of the processor:

On the same site I have some pictures of my computers for children going back to 1983:

P.S.: the OLPC generously sent me a BTest-2 prototype to thank me for the talks I have been giving about their project, so I have a lot of experience using the XO-1
