At the end it depends on your experience and how much time you have
available to work on a project.
Just browse through existing projects and see what is not finished yet
and what you might like to work on.
Or just start a new project you might like to work on. If you have a
Telecommunications background, pick something from there.
When I start looking in the Communication Controller section of the
projects there are a bunch of that don't have a "Done" sign. For example:
- Bluetooth baseband controller
- FireWire
- WLAN MAC Controller
- E1 framer/deframer
- OFDM
etc.
Another related project, always asked here for, but not finished is a
MP3 decoder.
Maybe this gives you an idea where to start with.
