My opinion is that this is the best prescription for certain and imminent death
of OpenCores as it stands. It could make OpenCores indistinguishable to other
    sites like open-but-no-so-open-crap, verificationcrapper, etc.

It mostly depends on the vendor intentions, and what "partnership" means to
them. Could it possibly mean much more taped-out ASICs, FPGA-enabled PCBs etc.?
Hopefully, yes, but this would involve a major investment from their side (money
, tools, infrastructure and people for coordination or even mentoring).

The most important question is under what conditions these IPs (and ASICs) will
enter the market. Probably, OpenRISC 1200 and 5-6 other projects from some
design houses will have certain success.

Anyway OpenCores is your creation and it is up to you.

    Kind regards
    Nikolaos Kavvadias

    PS1: Compensation is a nice vision :)

PS2: What about the licensing of the existing OpenCores cores? Will they have
    e.g. a GPLed version and vendor-endorsed one?
