Hi Ben,
Before we can answer that question we need to know a bit more about what you
intend to do etc.
i.e. Is it a 32 bit processor.
Direct memory access, or data and instruction cache memories?
What size of cache memory?
Harvard or common memory access?
What memory controller do you need?
What peripherals do you need first of all, and then what peripheral later?
Do you intend to optimise the implementation to a specific FPGA technology?
What FPGA technology, some are better than others?
What functions do you intend to implement on the processor? Multiply, Barrel
shift, DMA etc
E.g.
At the smallest you will get away with a Xilinx SpartanII 100.
i.e 16 bit processor, data and instruction cache 1k each, no multiply.
rs232 interface and simple graphics engine. Designed to be technology aware.
Adding peripherals will increase this.
Going 32 bit, you will need at least a Xilinx spartanII 200 etc
You will need to ask your self, and tell us what is your ultimate goal, such
that we can advice correctly!
Good luck
Lee
