I'm not sure what a catalog distributor is or what
you mean with "normal" distributors, but you should
check the web sites of PHY manufacturers who their
distributors are. Almost every distributor I know
will sell you single units. Try Pioneer, Arrow and
Avnet for example.
Here is a very useful tool to find distributors:

Distributors within Germany tend to be very arrogant and
like to avoid dealing with the small guys. Try ordering
over the net from the US directly.
Sometimes you can email the companies directly and ask
for free samples. Some companies are very quick sending
those out.
