The problem is that not everyone has the auto* tools installed, and even if they
do, the tools have a history of breaking backwards compatibility. Before a few
hours ago (you still can't 'cause port/Makefile.in is not in cvs yet), you
couldn't just run ./configure because the extras subdirectory disapeared.
