Well I found stuff for around $500 that would work. A good supplier
for dev boards seems to be Memec. It seems that you need at least a
Xilinx Spartan 3 1500 to fit the processor, and I haven't really
played around with the SoC stuff to see what that would take, and I
haven't really looked at Altera much as it seems to be much more
expensive and I just got a better feeling from Xilinx. So I decided
that I would probably have more fun playing around with some
microcontrollers and LCDs/LEDs/CCDs/Buzzers so I ordered some stuff
from eio.com instead and some microcontroller samples (free!) from
microchip.com. The eio stuff came yesterday and I'm still waiting for
the microchip stuff to ship (from Taiwan!). I can pick up the misc
headers/caps/resistors and such at the school store. I might play
around with OpenRISC later when FPGAs get bigger and cheaper, or I
come up with a good idea to use it with. It is a lot of fun to read
through the source for OpenRISC though, and I might have to set up a
simulation environment to play around in.

    Good Luck,

    ~Jake B
