You have a decent idea there, but you must also remember that consumers want fast and cheap. This would interfere with both. Also, if it updates via preboot internet, it is could still be vulnerable to phishing of sorts. If it updates with virus and rootkit friendly checks, or rootkits and viruses themselves, you are in a world of hurt. I think protection should start at the source rather than the end point. Websites should be scanned. They have email scanners already, but not for entire websites. That would bring any browsing with speed to a screechy halt, but with fiber becoming more popular and computers becomming ever more powerful, I don't think its future is too far out. That, or include a small 5 minute tutorial on preventing infection. I have run without any virus, spyware, adware, or any other kind of malware protection for almost 5 years now and never been affected by one. I run multiple layers of firewall, sure, but that is not for malware protection.
