    Hi Mike,

    Log can be calculated using the CORDIC algorithm.

    Ray Andraka has a paper:
    A survey of CORDIC algorithms for FPGAs

    You could also possibly consider using a ROM
    lookup table. The ROM doesn't necessarily have
    to be on-chip.
