Hi,
If you're interested in the interface typically used to transport
surround sound between different pieces of equipment, you might want
to take a look at some different IEC standards:
* IEC60958 (also called S/PDIF and AES/EBU) is the serial optical or
  electrical digial interface commonly found on CD players, DVD players
  etc. The electrical interface and transport stream format is defined
  here, plus everything concerning transmission of ordinary 2-channel
  PCM sound.
* IEC61937 seems to cover how to transmit MPEG, MPEG-2, AAC, DTS etc
  audio over the IEC60958 interface.
They're all available at http://www.iec.ch, unfortunately at a cost.

I am working on creating a "what-is-to-be-supported-in-hardware" sort of
document for Surroundsound.  The only material that I could get on the Web
was Applying Aural Research: the aesthetics of 5.1 surround  by Jim
Barbour.  Besides that document, I could not find any other helpful info.
Amazon pointed me to a Book, "SurroundSound -Up and Running", but I need to
get my claim clear before buying that book.  

Hope I am clear in my question.  If not, please let me know if I need to
clarify any other point.  If any one feels that this is not the right place
to put this query, kindly let me know so that this may not be repeated in
future and please point me to the right forum as well.
