Hi Colin,
I'm not too worried about error correction, but I could use one of the bits
for parity check or CRC or something. Forward error correction is new to
me. I did a quick google search and it sounds interesting. Is there
anywhere I can find the algorithms for FEC? Can you point me to some good
websites?

I'm not really answering your question, but have you considered using the
extra bits for forward error correction?
