    the answer in each case is 'not completely - but there are people working
    on it...'. But which software is relevant depends on your target...
    If you're talking fpgas, icarus verilog has some synthesis, but you won't
    get a full path source->bitstream from anything opensource yet.
    
    You could check out opencollector.org for a list, but the stuff listed
    on there is in very varying states of completion (don't trust the
    division into 'synthesis'/'simulation' on the summary page too much -
    that's done automatically, and lots of software fits partly into both 
    camps).
